By now, almost everyone is aware that the skin is the largest organ of the body and plays a very important part in protecting our body. In fact, it's the first line of defense against germs, bacteria and other invaders. The condition of our skin often reflects our overall health and can have an impact on our appearance. Because the skin is the first thing that others notice about us, we are always on the lookout for ways to improve our skin or repair skin damage such as rashes, sunburn and eczema or dry skin. If you peruse the skin care aisle of any store, even the grocery store, you'll see a number of skin care products which claim to provide relief and skin repair. As a smart consumer, you should also be aware that there are many home cures that can easily and safely give you the or at least similar results.

Buying these over the counter skin care products can be cost and the results are not always guaranteed. In addition, the chemicals that are sometimes found in these products can be more damaging than helpful. In fact, some of these chemicals may even aggravate the very skin condition you are trying to remedy. Following are some homemade skin remedies that are simple to make and use and chemical free.

Flaking Skin – Skin that is flaking is usually a sign of some nutrient deficiency, if it has not been diagnosed as a specific skin condition. Proteins, vitamin A, vitamin B, and vitamin C can stop peeling skin by replenishing the body with needed nutrients and oils. Fish – especially salmon – eggs, carrots, milk, cheese, vegetables and citrus fruits should be ateen on a daily basis in order to provide the body with the vitamins and minerals it needs. Be aware that peeling skin can be caused by a number of issues from chemical irritation to specific conditions, so be sure to check with a medical professional if you are unsure of the cause. Keeping your diet high in omega-3 fatty acids can lubricate the skin 'from the inside out' and help the skin heal quickly.

Razor burn – An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in the case of razor burn. Bad razor burn can easily develop into an unsightly, bumpy rash which itches. To prevent razor burn, use a warm, wet washcloth to soften the hairs on the face. This should make shaving a bit easier. Be sure to use a rich, moisturizing shaving shop or shaving gel, as it helps the razor to slide over the skin, resulting in less nicks and cuts. It's best to use a new blade every time you shave if at all possible. The sharper the razor, the better the shave. If razor burn develops, crush a few strawberries and mix them with some sour cream. This mixture should be applied to the rashy area and left on for about ten to fifteen minutes. Apply every day until the rash eliminated. Add some sugar to the unused portion and you've got a great dessert! Do not use this remedy if you happen to be allergic to strawberries – it will only make the problem worse. If a strawberry allergy is an issue, try using a wet tea bag on the rash.

Dry skin – A mashed ripe banana is an ideal way to treat dry skin on the neck and face. Make sure the banana is very yellow and soft. Apply the mashed banana to the face and neck, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cool water. The banana facial mask is also good for preventing wrinkles. To treat dry skin on the whole body take a milk bath (use the dry milk that comes in packs) once or twice a month or using a bath tea with added oils.

Sunburn – There are a number of homemade skin remedies that can provide pain relief for the burn Aloe Vera gel, which is readily available in drug stores and supermarkets, is one of the most well-known natural remedies for sunburns. No aloe vera gel? Try the cucumber and milk natural remedy: apply slices of raw cucumbers to the burnt area for relief. Got milk? Dip a paper towel or washcloth in whole milk and gently apply to the skin. Milk tends to have a calming effect on burned and inflated skin. For a burn that is all over, dissolve a cup of baking soda in a lukewarm bath and soak. The baking soda should soothe the burn and take away the pain.
